The Trust Board meet six times per academic year and also has committees which meet termly. The Trust Board receives regular updates from each academy in the Education Learning Trust.

Mike Chow - Trustee

Prior to his appointment with the Education Learning Trust, Mike was a co-opted governor at Gatley Primary School for 3 1/2 years, of which he served as Chair of Governors for nearly 3 years.

Mike has been a Civil Servant for nearly 20 years and is currently the National Lead and Head of Profession for a team of investigators located in 11 offices across the UK. In this role, Mike regularly engages with senior managers from both the public and private sector. Mike seeks opportunities for staff engagement and is cognizant to the importance of such in creating a positive culture. He is passionate about staff development and proactively ensures equality of opportunity for all, including the creation of a bespoke sponsorship scheme for staff from under represented backgrounds. 

Outside of work, Mike is very a much a family man and he likes nothing better than to try to relax with his family, going on holiday as much as possible, walking the dog, swimming, cycling and reading.

James Evans - Chair of Trust Board and Member

James Evans has been involved in Education Governance since 2007 and a Trustee of the ELT since 2014.

Having recently concluded a 30 year career in the criminal justice sector as a police officer- twenty eight of those years in specialist criminal investigation roles in the fields of Serious and Organised Crime and Counter Terrorism- James currently works as a Consultant to law enforcement utilising his extensive experience of managing complex long-term specialist criminal investigations in relation to serious and organised crime with corresponding analytical, investigative and leadership skills, which benefit his role within the MAT.

James' education includes an initial HND in Nautical Science and subsequently a BSc in Social Sciences as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Middle Eastern Studies.

In his spare time away from work, he is a keen rugby follower and a ski instructor with long-term interests in the outdoors, mountaineering and hillwalking.

He feels very strongly that all children deserve the chance to experience as broad a range of opportunities and experiences as possible. He is passionate about helping to create an environment of academic, sporting, social and creative opportunities that are accessible to every child regardless of their background and providing a solid foundation for the future. Key to this is maintaining the focus on achievement within a happy, supportive and caring school environment.

Lynsey Galley - Trustee

Lynsey has been involved in governance at the ELT since 2012, as a parent governor at Meadowbank Primary and has been Chair of Governors since 2017. She has been an ELT Trustee since 2017. She has been a strong advocate of governor collaboration and training; completing several training courses herself, including the Governor Leadership Development Programme in 2016/17.

Lynsey has worked for KFC since 2005, in Operations and Head Office roles. Working in many varied strategic roles has given Lynsey broad experience and skills that she brings to her governing roles. Lynsey is currently the Operations Director of a KFC franchise business operating 22 stores in the North West and is responsible for all areas of the business on behalf of investor owners.

When she is not working and governing, she can be seen running around the streets of Cheadle and likes to relax with yoga and baking!

Kate Gillan - Trustee

Kate is a qualified secondary English teacher, specialising in the KS5 English curriculum. She has a MA from the University of Glasgow and a post-graduate teaching qualification from the University of Strathclyde. Kate worked in schools in Glasgow, Stirling, Bury and Stockport for 8 years and was Deputy Head of English before leaving to gain experience of the education sector as a Civil Servant. Kate has worked for the Regional Schools Commissioner for Lancashire and West Yorkshire at the Department for Education for a little over 3 years as a Delivery Team Leader, working with academy trusts and local authorities to convert vulnerable schools into strong sponsor trusts. Kate’s professional experience has provided her with a detailed understanding of the secondary education and academies sector.  

Kate joins the ELT trust board having been a trustee at The Abney Trust for the past two years. During this time, she has been part of Kingsway’s journey to joining ELT and has developed a clear vision for ELT as a community focused trust which supports its young people throughout their school life.

Since leaving teaching, Kate has also worked with a local charity (Insight Innovations) as a mentor to young care leavers. Apart from being rewarding, this work has enabled Kate to understand the needs of young people from a care and pastoral perspective, provided her with strategies and tools to support young people going through difficult experiences.

Kate is committed to putting her experience as a mentor, and from her time as a teacher and trustee, to good use in her local community by continuing as a trustee at ELT. Kate is keen to champion collaboration between all schools in the trust as it grows, ensuring the trust continues to provide the best education and support to all its young people.

Ian Hutchings - Trustee

Ian Hutchings has over 23 years experience as a health and safety practitioner, initially working in industry, followed by six years as a consultant with Det Norske Veritas and DuPont Safety Resources. Ian founded his own consultancy business in 2006.  Prior to working in health and safety, Ian spent nine years as an armourer in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in the British Army.  Ian saw active service in the first Gulf War, Northern Ireland and two tours of Bosnia as part of the United Nations Protection Force.

 

Ian has extensive experience working with boards and operational management teams in education, charities and global private sector organisations.  Ian is a chartered safety and health practitioner (CMIOSH), a member of the Institute of Directors, member of the Chartered Management Institute and a member of the Institute of Consulting. Ian is passionate about a pragmatic and balanced approach to learning about risk for children and encouraging safe but challenging environments for them to grow as individuals. In addition to Ian’s workplace health and safety experience, he has developed and implemented safety plans for major events, such as the Aston Martin DBS59 bespoke car launch at the 2019 Le Mans 24 hour race, the red arrows Aston Martin car launch plus other significant events.

 

Ian joined the ELT board of trustees to be able to provide input from his experience, in order to assist the trust to grow successfully as an organisation, whilst retaining its founding values and provide a safe, healthy and nurturing culture for the wellbeing of children, families and staff.

Gary Keown - Trustee

Gary has been involved in school governance for over 10 years, initially as a Governor of The Kingsway School before becoming Chair of Trustees at The Abney Trust. In these roles, he has taken an active interest in school leadership, finance, marketing, attendance and behaviour.

After graduating with a degree in Economics, Gary joined the BBC working as a journalist across TV and Radio before becoming a Business Correspondent. He moved into leadership roles 20 years ago running multimedia teams in Yorkshire before moving back to his native North West in 2012 where he now works for BBC Sport.

Gary completed a masters in 2005 with an MBA from Bradford University and he is also a leadership coach with a particular focus on education.

Married with two grown up children, Gary lives in Cheadle with his wife Christine. He enjoys golf and is a lifelong supporter of Liverpool Football Club.

Michelle Murray - Trustee

Michelle Murray is Chief Executive and Executive Principal of the Education Learning Trust and Head of Gatley Teaching School.

Until March 2017, Michelle was Executive Head teacher at Gatley Primary School. The school was recognised as a National Support School in 2012, and as a National Teaching School in 2013 (Cohort 3). The Teaching School has established an alliance of regional schools, to form the Empower Teaching School Alliance.

Michelle is a National Leader of Education (NLE). Her NLE work involves supporting and monitoring underperforming schools in an OFSTED category, alongside wider stakeholders. She has a track record of working with schools to address weaknesses so they progress towards good or better.

Michelle is a facilitator on national leadership programmes for NCTL and coordinates the delivery of regional NW programmes, including ‘Stepping Into Headship’ with other Teaching Schools and the locally designed ‘Aspiring Leaders Programme’ in Stockport. She is actively involved in the Greater Manchester Strategic Partnership Group, working to promote school improvement.

Michelle has been an OFSTED Additional Inspector since 2013. Previously, Michelle has developed her leadership experience in headships in two previous schools in contrasting areas of the North West. Michelle has also developed curriculum materials and training within her role as an Advisory Teacher with schools, at a national level. Michelle is also a member of the National Executive committee for ASPE (Association for the Study of Primary Education).

At Gatley, all staff are actively involved in research to develop evidence-based practice. Within the Empower TS Alliance all our schools work within Research and Development Teams, their research designs and evaluations are based on further developing high quality practice in partnership with MMU. This has impacted on professional development of staff, through appraisal outcomes and has improved learning achievements within the alliance.

John Novak - Trustee

John has significant experience in leadership and management across the education sector. John was a Headteacher, a Local Authority Adviser, OFSTED Inspector, Teacher Trainer and an Independent Education Consultant. His breadth of roles have provided him with a significantly wide educational perspective which enables his advice and support to be tailored and specific.

John has worked extensively in both the maintained and independent sectors across the country and internationally. He has demonstrated an understanding of the importance of innovation, implementation and evaluation in order to sustain improvement, momentum and also to achieve challenging goals. He has the ability to work effectively with senior managers to bring about real school improvement. He combines a wealth of experience and a clear understanding of good and outstanding school practice in which he can contextualise his advice. Along with the interpersonal skills to develop highly effective partnerships, this critical friend approach ensures that whilst acknowledging and celebrating success and high performance, he is able to establish a focus on key areas of improvement, which are both challenging and motivational to leaders.

Amanda Webb - Trustee

Amanda Webb is a qualified accountant of over 20 years, with a broad range of experience spanning many sectors and industries including SME businesses, large corporate, charities and educational establishments in the North West.

She currently works as the School Business Manager at a local independent three form entry primary school and enjoys the busy, challenging environment of school life. Amanda has served as a governor in a local state primary school and is currently trustee and treasurer of the Didsbury Arts Festival, a community based, weeklong festival.

As a busy mum of four children who has been involved in the education system in Manchester and Stockport for the last 20 years as a parent, volunteer and employee, she is committed to putting her skill base to good use within the local community in serving as a trustee at ELT. What little spare time left is spent with family, cooking and exercising.

Helen White - Trustee

Helen White has both teaching and leadership experience in primary, secondary and special school phases. Her senior leadership roles in schools include Deputy Headship and Head of Department in the secondary sector.  Helen has also been a Headteacher in both a primary special school and a mainstream primary school with resourced SEN provision.

In the latter part of her career, Helen was a senior school improvement adviser for two LEAs with responsibility for school leadership and school workforce development strategy. As an Ofsted inspector, educational adviser and private consultant she has worked with schools across the different sectors, judged as both  outstanding and requiring improvement.

She has extensive experience of school and LEA financial and human resource management, strategic planning, leadership development and training, monitoring and evaluation. In addition, Helen has worked with a range of national agencies including the National College for School Leadership and the DfE as an educational consultant.  

In her capacity as both Head Teacher and Educational Adviser, based on the principle of collaborative learning, Helen has successfully developed and implemented models underpinning effective networking across schools and LEAs. This has also included the design and operation of a website to support school to school networking.

Helen is fully committed to the development of a learning environment that meets the learning  needs of all  children and adults .She is open to change and new ways of securing outstanding and creative educational provision.

Alice Spreckley

Member

Alice Spreckley is a Project / Delivery Manager at Atos SE, a global digital services and business technology provider. She has worked in a variety of technical and management roles, gaining experience in planning, delivery, financial accountability, quality management, performance management and training. Alice has worked in several countries on programmes within the public sector, transport and telecoms industries. She has also managed a successful higher level apprenticeship scheme within the company. Alice has worked for Atos and its predecessor companies since 1998. Previously, she graduated from the University of Oxford with a BA (Hons) in Philosophy, Politics & Economics. Alice is a Parent Governor at Gatley Primary School, and member of the Resources Committee. She brings her working and life experience from outside of education, alongside others, to create a team with different perspectives and views to challenge and support the school. Alice has 3 children of primary school age, which have contributed to her developing a strong interest in both education and school life, and she is committed to supporting these. She has previously been Vice-Chairperson of Gatley Primary PTA (Parent Teacher Association).

Jon Keating

Member

Jon Keating has worked for the national governing body of sport for aquatics (swimming, diving, water polo, synchro); the amateur swimming association (ASA), for almost 10 years. Jon is Head of Club Development, a national role, based at Loughborough University, with responsibility to increase the talent pool and membership for aquatics across the country, ensuring sustainability of the sport, and continued national and international success. Jon graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University with a BSc (hons) in sport and exercise science, and believes strongly in the power of sport and a fit and active lifestyle, both individually and as a family. Jon has been a governor and a member of the Resources Committee for 2 years and combined with his role at ASA, is experienced at measuring performance against aspirational targets, over multiple sites.
