Student Leadership
Aims of Student Leadership at Gatley Primary School
At Gatley Primary School, we believe that every child has the potential to be a leader. Our student leadership opportunities through our life skills curriculum, pupil parliament and enrichment opportunities are designed to empower pupils, build confidence, and enable them to make a positive difference within our school community.
The aims of student leadership at Gatley Primary are to:
- Promote pupil voice by giving children meaningful opportunities to share their ideas, opinions, and feedback on school life.
- Encourage responsibility so that pupils take ownership of their learning, behaviour, and the environment around them.
- Develop leadership skills such as teamwork, communication, problem solving, and resilience that will support children now and in the future.
- Model positive behaviour and values so that student leaders inspire others through respect, kindness, and inclusion.
- Support the school community by contributing to school improvement projects, events, and initiatives that make Gatley Primary the best it can be.
- Foster pride and belonging by encouraging children to feel valued as part of our school and wider community.
Through these aims, we ensure that student leadership is not only about taking on roles, but about nurturing confident, responsible, and caring young people who are ready to make a difference.
Through the Life Skills curriculum, children develop their leadership skills, fostering confidence, responsibility, and the ability to positively influence others.
SSAT Leadership Accreditation Scheme
At Gatley Primary School, we want every child to see themselves as a leader. Leadership for us is about more than holding a role – it’s about developing confidence, teamwork, responsibility, and the ability to make a difference.
To support this, we use the SSAT Student Leadership Accreditation scheme, which provides a clear and recognised way for children to grow as leaders and have their efforts celebrated. This scheme helps pupils to set goals, reflect on their achievements, and be proud of the positive impact they have on our school community.
By taking part, children at Gatley Primary gain valuable skills that will support their learning now and prepare them for the future.
The recognition scheme enables students to self- and peer-evaluate their student leadership contribution across 18 key skills and abilities within the six key domains of Student Leadership for IMPACT. These are shown in the infographic below.
